Note: 4/7/2010: I would love for this addiction to be taken away right now; however, it has certainly brought me closer to the spirit, and helped me to take advantage of the Atonement. I try not to complain about my circumstances, but I know that one of my character weaknesses is a lack of patience.

STEP 3
-- The Lord could have removed the burdens of Alma and his people; instead, He strengthened them to bear "their burdens with ease." Notice that they did not complain but submitted cheerfully and patiently to the will of the Lord. Write about the humility it takes to want immediate relief and yet be willing to have a burden lightened gradually.

Brethren, you have a duty to learn as much as you can. Please encourage your families, your quorum members, everyone to learn and become better educated. If formal education is not available, do not allow that to prevent you from acquiring all the knowledge you can. Under such circumstances, the best books, in a sense, can become your "university"—a classroom that is always open and admits all who apply. Strive to increase your knowledge of all that is "virtuous, lovely, or of good report or praiseworthy." (Articles of Faith 1:13.) Seek knowledge "by study and also by faith." (D&C 109:7.) Seek with a humble spirit and contrite heart. (D&C 136:33.) As you apply the spiritual dimension of faith to your study—even of temporal things—you can amplify your intellectual capacity, for "if your eye be single to [God’s] glory, your whole [body] shall be filled with light, . . . and [comprehend] all things." (D&C 88:67.)

In the past, if you were religiously active, you may have been motivated by fear of the judgment of God or of what others would think. Perhaps you acted out of a sense of duty. Today you recognize that service is a way of coming unto Christ. It is a way of expressing love to God. It expresses a continuing need for His power and gratitude for His divine help. Consider whether your activity in the Church is still motivated by fear or duty or if it is a natural outgrowth of your reborn faith in Christ.

While the phrase "been there, done that" may work as an excuse to avoid skateboarding, decline the invitation for a motorbike ride, or bypass the spicy curry at the buffet, it is not an acceptable excuse for avoiding covenant responsibilities to consecrate our time, talents, and resources in the work of the kingdom of God.

Even though people's addictions are different, some truths, like this one, never vary--nothing begins without an individual's will to make it begin. Freedom from addiction and cleanliness begin with a tiny flicker of will. People say individuals finally become willing to abstain when the pain of the problem becomes worse than the pain of the solution. Have you come to that point? If you have not and you continue in your addiction, you surely will reach that point because addiction is a progressive problem. STEP 1
Many of us began our addictions out of curiosity. Some of us became involved because of a justifiable need for a prescription drug or as an act of deliberate rebellion. Many began this path when barely older than children. Whatever our motive for starting and our circumstances, we soon discovered that the addiction relieved more than just physical pain. It provided stimulation or numbed painful feelings or moods. It helped us avoid the problems we faced--or so we thought. For a while, we felt free of fear, worry, loneliness, discouragement, regret, or boredom. But because life is full of the conditions that prompt these kinds of feelings, we resorted to our addictions more and more often. Still, most of us failed to recognize or admit that we had lost the ability to resist and abstain on our own. As Elder Russell M. Nelson of the Quorum of the Twelve observed: "Addiction surrenders later freedom to choose. Through chemical means, one can literally become disconnected from his or her own will" (in Conference Report, Oct. 1988, 7; or Ensign, Nov. 1988, 7).
