George Albert Smith was blessed with a firm understanding of the purpose of life, and this enabled him to encourage others as they faced adversity. He frequently reminded the Saints that "we are living eternal lives"-that eternity doesn't begin after this life but that mortality is a crucial part of eternity. "I sometimes have said to my friends when they seemed to be at the crossroads, uncertain as to which way they wanted to go, 'Today is the beginning of eternal happiness or eternal disappointment for you.'" (In Conference Report, Oct. 1944, 94.)

The Privilege of Prayer
My beloved sisters and brothers, God our Father is not a feeling or an idea or a force. He is a holy person who, as the scriptures teach, has a face and hands and a glorious immortal body. He is real, He knows each of us individually, and He loves us, every one. He wants to bless us.

The Songs They Could Not Sing
Many people face significant problems or even tragedy during this mortal journey. All over the world we see examples of trials and tribulations. (See John 16:33.) We are moved in our souls by television images of death, acute suffering, and despair. We see the Japanese struggling heroically against devastation from an earthquake and tsunami. The haunting scenes from the destruction of the World Trade Center towers, which we recently reviewed, were painful to relive. Something stirs us when we become aware of such tragedy, especially when suffered by innocent people.

STEP 1
Studying the scriptures and the statements of Church leaders will help you begin your recovery. This study will increase your understanding and help you learn. You can use the scriptures, statements, and questions that follow for prayerful personal study, for writing, and for group discussion. The thought of writing may frighten you, but writing is a powerful tool for recovery. It will give you time to reflect; it will help you focus your thinking; it will help you see and understand the issues, thoughts, and behaviors surrounding your addiction. When you write, you will also have a record of your thoughts. As you progress through the steps, you will be able to measure your progress. For now, just be honest and sincere as you write your thoughts, feelings, and impressions.

Acts of the Apostles
This book, as stated in its opening words, is the second of a two-part work written to Theophilus. The first part is known to us as the book of Luke. The early part of Acts records some of the major missionary activities of the Twelve Apostles under the direction of Peter during the time immediately following the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. The last half of the book outlines some of the travels and missionary work of Paul. It is evident that the book of Acts is not intended to be a comprehensive history of the early Church, but is mainly a recitation of the early missionary efforts and the important opening of missionary activity to peoples other than the Jews. A brief outline of the book is foreshadowed by Jesus' words in Acts 1: 8, "Ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem (chs. 1 - 5), and in all Judaea, and in Samaria (chs. 6 - 9), and unto the uttermost part of the earth (chs. 10 - 28)."
