Note: How do we know if plural marriage is being practiced according to the will of the Lord or the lusts of the flesh? Here is one test: are the people committing sins or are they becoming more righteous? Are the leaders taxing away their possessions. We hear stories of modern polygamists who do not have lives of service and love but abuse their children and drive them away. Their leaders confiscate their possessions such as telling the kids they can't have bikes because the families have to raise money.
Mosiah 11:2
For behold, he did not keep the commandments of God, but he did walk after the desires of his own heart. And he had many wives and concubines. And he did cause his people to commit sin, and do that which was abominable in the sight of the Lord. Yea, and they did commit whoredoms and all manner of wickedness.

We have done very well at distributing the authority of the priesthood. We have priesthood authority planted nearly everywhere. We have quorums of elders and high priests worldwide. But distributing the authority of the priesthood has raced, I think, ahead of distributing the power of the priesthood.
Contrast authority with what God would do in performing an ordinance vs knowhng what we would do and say.

Note: Salvation comes through faith in Jesus name. But think about the nature of faith and the covenants we make at baptism. Faith without works is dead, in other words there can be no faith without works as faith properly understood is the righteous use of agency. Our sacramental covenant is to be willing to take his name upon us and always remember him. If we use our agency while keeping this covenant of taking and remembering his name in all we do and think then we will be heirs of salvation.
Mosiah 3:9
And lo, he cometh unto his own, that salvation might come unto the children of men even through faith on his name; and even after all this they shall consider him a man, and say that he hath a devil, and shall scourge him, and shall crucify him.
Mosiah 3:9
And lo, he cometh unto his own, that salvation might come unto the children of men even through faith on his name; and even after all this they shall consider him a man, and say that he hath a devil, and shall scourge him, and shall crucify him.

In this sense he becomes a Father of the Earth and in Heaven as none shall get into heaven save they be adopted into his inheritance and receive of his foulness through his atonement. Notice how these verses are proceeds by the description of the atonement.

Note: To serve God we serve our fellow men. This is interesting when you consider we are Gods children, with the implication of exaltation - we are not only serving God by helping his children but we are serving Gods in embyro. This scripture raises our sights to claim how we treat others is how we treat God. Consider the Nepali custom of Jatin Devobai - treat a stranger as God. I wonder if there is also a direct relationship with the atonement. God suffered for the misdeeds we do one to a other and bby chosing to help on another we are decreasing the burden that Christ bore.
Mosiah 2:17
And behold, I tell you these things that ye may learn wisdom; that ye may learn that when ye are in the service of your fellow beings ye are only in the service of your God.

Note: Interesting that a precursor to revelation here is not just faith but anxiety or worry. They are worded about the what will happen to their seed, to the Laminites, etc. Revelation takes a great desire to know and if we are anxious or very worried then it preoccupied our mind and the Lord gives us a revelation to help us in our anxiety. They were sorrowful about the destruction of their seed which Nephi saw a vision of and no doubt saw the wars and divisions already taking place as sign of this destruction and anxiety foretold in 1 Nephi 12:19-20 and 1 Nephi 15:5. Joseph smith received his vision because he was worded for his soul. I have received my own revelation about things I was worried about. It's also interesting in John 20, the angels come to Mary Magdalene after she started weeping. She was very anxious and received perhaps the most wonderful revelation of all.
Anxiety and being anxious one the key to receiving revelation. Not meet that I command in all things.... be anxiously engaged (the inference is that we will know for ourselves the mind of God if we do this without being commanded)
Jacob 1:5
For because of faith and great anxiety, it truly had been made manifest unto us concerning our people, what things should happen unto them.

Note: The people were taught a certain way because they did not obey. Punishment and destruction was taught as a consequence to the people to persuade them to hunble themselves. In other times people are taught live and charity to inspire them to greatness. One important difference is that even though the prophets had received foreknowledge revelation of Christ not all had really understood and received it for themselves. In some instances where the people were more willing to accept, they were taught charity. This is similar to line upon line. The people received the teaching they were ready for. Teaching an example of absolute humility and love became easier after Christ had cone because there was a physical example for believers to consider and learn of. So many teachings after Christ came were on charity.
Enos 1:23
And there was nothing save it was exceeding harshness, preaching and prophesying of wars, and contentions, and destructions, and continually reminding them of death, and the duration of eternity, and the judgments and the power of God, and all these things—stirring them up continually to keep them in the fear of the Lord. I say there was nothing short of these things, and exceedingly great plainness of speech, would keep them from going down speedily to destruction. And after this manner do I write concerning them.

Note: The Lord has commanded his people to do otherwise only if he wants them to raise up a righteous posterity ("unto me"). This practice was probably the most difficult thing to endure for all involved, but especially for the women who voluntarily entered into it. They sacrificed a core part of their identity, however, I believe that because of this sacrifice, their faith was so much the greater. Jesus said, "Whosoever will lose his life for my sake shall find it." (Matthew 16:25) These women went through the "refiners fire" and came out with such a strong faith that they were able to raise an extraordinary posterity. The restored Church needed a strong foundation of faithful members. The early new testament church fell away after the original Apostles died sSterling fromba weak foundation of faith. Within a couple generations, it was broken into different sects which distorted the plain truths of the Gospel as taught by Christ and his Apostles. The noble, and faithful mothers who sacrificed so much in practicing plural marriage, and were made stronger because of it, is the reason why their children did not start to fall away as with the early Christian church. Just as the brave young warriors of Helaman, in the book of Mormon, took comfort in the faith of their mothers and said before going into battle, "We do not doubt our mothers knew it" (Alma 56:48); the rising generation of the church in the late 1800s, had been through the refiners fire and taught the gospel first hand by their mothers. These were some of the greatest women ever to walk this earth. Because of that sacrifice, they knew it, they stayed strong in the faith and the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints was built upon a strong foundation. After the next generation of Saints had been risen up, plural marriage was no longer necessary, and the Lord took it away. Because as the Lord says it should always be one man and one wife unless he commands otherwise in a time of exception.
Jacob 2:30
For if I will, saith the Lord of Hosts, raise up seed unto me, I will command my people; otherwise they shall hearken unto these things.

Note: We see in the above verses that the people were already anxious and concerned about the state if things. They had already suffered wars and divisions. And the way they dealt with this is to labor with diligence to persuade them. They had civil authority over them and the way they dealt was still to persuade with long suffering. This is after the pattern of the priesthood and can be contrasted with the Catholic church during the dark ages.... fighting over creeds burning of heretics. When the true church governed the affairs of men the only power wielded in defense and promotion of belief was that of persuasion.
Jacob 1:7
Wherefore we labored diligently among our people, that we might persuade them to come unto Christ, and partake of the goodness of God, that they might enter into his rest, lest by any means he should swear in his wrath they should not enter in, as in the provocation in the days of temptation while the children of Israel were in the wilderness.

Note: Nephi is greatly sorrowful and he calls it "above all" because he witnessed the destruction of his family. It seems likely it was some of his children, whether through war or turning away because he gives the records to Jacob and not his children. Jacob also gives the records to his own children. And Jacob testifies that the next genratiin is wicked and bad husbands and fathers. Perhaps Nephi experienced the same pattern with his family that Lehi also experienced. See reasons for destruction here: 1 Nephi 12:19-20

Note: This seems true for everyone on earth. Those who misunderstood the spirit will be led to an understanding. Notice it didn't say given an understanding but the will come or arrive at it ultimately by their own uses if agency. This refers to those who diligently seek and study knowledge. Those who murmur and complainabout why or how various things in the gospel work will learn true doctrine to help them gain their own understandings. This scripture proves both those who have zeal but do not correctly understand as well as those who have a degree of faith but complain as a result of their not knowing true doctrine.

Note: It's clear that Nephi was teaching the things of his heart that he received by revelation and he was very troubled that others would not listen to it and receive a confirming revelation of it by the spirit. He valued these truths so much and loved his people so much that he cried and prayed they would receive it. These verses seem to imply his teaching was rejected (at least for a time) by some... since Nephi did not pass the records on to his children and Jacob passed the records on to his own children (not Nephi's) I wonder if Nephi's own children turned away from the truth. Nephi said in earlier chapters how he was depressed because he saw the end of his seed. The next verses show his great hope that his prayers will be heard and by the grace of God his people will be blessed.

Note: We don't need to have power in words or great eloquence in our teachings but need the spirit so its power can allow our words to penetrate the hearts of others. There are many teachings which are given which are rejected by others in and out of the church because they don't have the spirit because they have rejected the Holy Ghosts promptings to live worthily with charity and virtue and have thus hardened their hearts to its promptings. Without the spirit carrying the message into their hearts they pick and choose whatever doctrines they prefer.

Note: Interesting that the missionary efforts were started to prevent war and what happened is the humble were converted and the wicked angered at this conversion and stirred up to war anyway. Reminds me of the saying of Jesus in Matthew 10:34,35 Particularly, in verse 36 where it says a mans foes will be those of his own household. Sometimes preaching the gospel among the wicked leads to war. Consider this with the potential expansion of missionary work in the Middle East or in China and some south Amer countries today. Also see a parallel in the civil war and ww2 where many converts came from these lands and in 1-2 generations there was wars poored out upon the people after many others rejected the truth.

Note, in a democracy we can vote them out... Moroni wouldn't have that luxury and would have to use force. He miss applied that revelation about what to do with sinful leaders and assumed his own leader was sinning. This revelation could have formed the basis for direct inquiry of Pahoran about his testimony. Instead Moroni assumed his revelation applied to one thing and didn't seek further light and knowledge. Looking back this is easier to see but at the time he certainly felt confident. How often do we miss apply our revelations?
Alma 60:33

Note: Here is a precedent of some who is perfectly righteous before God refusing not only a calling but a prophetic calling. Also interesting that Helaman, the son, was not the first choice. As it was, Nephihah is forgotten to the BoM other than a passing mention and Helaman becomes one of its more famous figures. Imagine if Nephihah accepted the calling? We would have perhaps lost the story of Helaman and his stripling warriors. Two possibilities; the Lord intended Helaman all along to receive the records, in that case Nephihah was inspired to reject the calling -- perhaps Alma was mistaken to offer them to Nephihah and he rightly recognized the Lords will. Or Nephihah was given this opportunity to become a prophet and he turned it down.
Alma 50:37
And it came to pass that in the same year that the people of Nephi had peace restored unto them, that Nephihah, the second chief judge, died, having filled the judgment-seat with perfect uprightness before God.

Note: This makes you wonder how he thought they came from Jerusalem. Could they have been a group from the Asian Berring Strait and just assumed they also came from Jersualem in the kinda of the myopic Nephites? They had the prophecy that only those inspired by God could come to this land and perhaps assumed that God only worked through the Jews. It's strange to assume they are Jews when all the evidence shows they are not.... no knowledge of Jewish God, no knowledge of the records, no ability to speak the language. The only thing this group seemed to have was an interest in the scriptures which is not surprising for a group who might not even have sophisticated written language. Also interesting that this group was described as being larger and was "adopted" into Nephite culture. It raises interesting questions about DNA evidence if other, larger, groups would be adopted into their seed and numbered among them. The scriptures say that I can become the seed of Abraham even though I'm not descended from him. This is a spiritual adoption. So too is probably said of the Laminites left in the land. They are descendants of those who were adopted into Lehi's family as these scriptures show that even a larger group can become adopted and integrated as a part of the smaller group.
Omni 1:17
And at the time that Mosiah discovered them, they had become exceedingly numerous. Nevertheless, they had had many wars and serious contentions, and had fallen by the sword from time to time; and their language had become corrupted; and they had brought no records with them; and they denied the being of their Creator; and Mosiah, nor the people of Mosiah, could understand them.

Note: Those that hearken (listen and obey) are given further teachings and counselling to know how to live and improve their lives. Additionally they are admonished by the Lord, which is a synonym for reprove. This admonishing, which comes by and from having the spirit helps us to individually discern and correct our shortcomings. From this scripture we see doing all of this leads to power in the life of the individual. As we read the blessings of this we can see the consequence of having the power of God is to help rescue others. The discovered a large group who were lost from the truth and rejoiced in having the words of God in their lives again.

Note: Its interesting that like Lehi and then Nephi, this group was also warned to flee. But they had to listen to their leader, listen to the spirit individually and then be humble enough to leave their homes before disaster struck. Compare this with many in the time of Joseph Smith and Brigham Young. JS knew the church would one day end up in the rocky mountains and yet they did not flee until after they encounters troubles. Considering Far West and how his warning to flee was not heeded I wonder if the church would have had the faith to leave for the west unless they were forced to flee. BY could have stayed and sought redress and I think the Saints would have been united to stay with him but was Ernest both in spirit and by action they needed to leave. Imagine the trouble the church would have experienced as a part of the union during the civil war.

Note: There was disunity among the army Zeniff was a part of. He saw the good in his enemies, or those people he previously thought were bad. He wanted to convince others to have peace with them but others were so intent on fighting what they perceived was the enemy the ended up fighting themselves. This is a tragic example of disunity.
But even Zeniff was in error as he admits he was so zealous for land he sold himself and his followers into slavery which has terrible consequences later. So it seems he was right to encourage peace but wrong to fight against his brothers and mistaken in all if this for his zeal of getting land.
Mosiah 9:2

Note: This quote of Isaiah was directed at the Jews who loved their nation more than God and Nephi wanted to make the same reference to Laman and Lemuel who always wanted to go back to Jerusalem. But applied today we have LDS who focus more on America and patriotism than God. This does not say Jerusalem or the USA are not holy but the are holy because and if only the people love God more than themselves and love and live Gods words more than they love the nation. The question of why this was included by Nephi.... because he was speaking to Jews who no doubt were upset at leaving their land of promise behind. Consider how Jews feel about Jerusalem today. Now consider how we as Americans feel about our nation today. Nephi was also specifically including these verses for us and really only us (plus perhaps other later prophets to follow). But since Nephi wrote all these chapters many years (30) after Laman and Lemuel already went off on their own and became lamanites it is clear Nephi is no longer needing to speak to them. Nephi is then warning us against placing too much trust and hope in our land of promise. The same attitudes adopted about the old land of promise apply to the new one. Truly this is a land of promise and we call ourselves a promised land but do we remember the promises the Lord made to us? Do we study and ponder them? Do we keep our promises to the Lord? If not, what right have we to praise the promised land as we are then putting the land before God. This is definitely not to say patriotism is a bad thing...

This shows he was willing to use scriptures in a way that likened them unto himself and was not bound by any single interpretation. Isaiah was writing about the destruction and sacattering of the Jews in Israel and Nephi takes these verses adds to them and applies them to himself and his descensents regarding the destructions, scatterings, and ultimate gatherings to come for his posterity.

Note: Interesting that they expressed concern for their wives and trying to remove their burdens while Nephi just focused on them being strengthened. Perhaps it is a false concern as we can see Laman and Lemuel are ultimately concerned for material wealth and their own comfort and use the suffering if others as proxy for their own desires to avoid suffering. In any case Jacob later says Laman and Lemuels sons end up being better fathers than the Nephites. See notes on Jacob 3:7 for and example
1 Nephi 17:20
And thou art like unto our father, led away by the foolish imaginations of his heart; yea, he hath led us out of the land of Jerusalem, and we have wandered in the wilderness for these many years; and our women have toiled, being big with child; and they have borne children in the wilderness and suffered all things, save it were death; and it would have been better that they had died before they came out of Jerusalem than to have suffered these afflictions.

Note: This would be a strong rebuke to church members to hear that those who keep not the commandments are better husbands and fathers. Especially since these are the immediate children of Laman and Lemuel who were portrayed as making merry with their wives on the ship to the Promised Land or who complained in behalf of their suffering wives in the wilderness while Nephi just talked about how the women were strengthens. The he attitude of Nephi was to be strengthed in the face of burdens contrasted with Laman and Lemuel who wanted those burdens removed completely. I wonder how this attitude influenced their children into becoming the fathers they became. The Nephites perhaps suffered from uncaring self righteousness. See 1 Nephi 17 and 1 Nephi 18.
Jacob 3:7
Behold, their husbands love their wives, and their wives love their husbands; and their husbands and their wives love their children; and their unbelief and their hatred towards you is because of the iniquity of their fathers; wherefore, how much better are you than they, in the sight of your great Creator?

Note: It would seem that Lehi was called away from Jerusalem to spare him and his family from destruction but if that were the case they went out of the frying pan and into the fire. Within 10 years or so Jerusalem was destroyed but also Nephi says there were wars and destructions among his own people. So they were spared from war and destruction only to encounter war and destruction in the Promised Land as their family was torn apart and divided. The chief difference being the location of the promised land where many generations could flourish in a fullness of faith while also laying the groundwork for the last dispensation and the BoM to eventually come forth in a free nation with religious liberty.
1 Nephi 19:4
Wherefore, I, Nephi, did make a record upon the other plates, which gives an account, or which gives a greater account of the wars and contentions and destructions of my people. And this have I done, and commanded my people what they should do after I was gone; and that these plates should be handed down from one generation to another, or from one prophet to another, until further commandments of the Lord.

Note: See notes on Deuteronomy 13:6 verse. Its possible Laman and Lemuel saw this as an attempt at false prophecy and according to Deut. false prophets should be killed even if they are your own brother. They could have seen themselves as following the Law of Moses. Compare this with Nephi actually killing Laban. Nephi questioned but ultimately followed the spirit, while Laman and Lemuel didn't rely on the spirit but reacted with anger and possibly used scriptural rationale to seek to kill Nephi. One was receiving revelation and the other was wresting the scriptures for their own use.
1 Nephi 7:16
And it came to pass that when I, Nephi, had spoken these words unto my brethren, they were angry with me. And it came to pass that they did lay their hands upon me, for behold, they were exceedingly wroth, and they did bind me with cords, for they sought to take away my life, that they might leave me in the wilderness to be devoured by wild beasts.

Note: Notice how Laman and Lemuel as prideful, self centered people who had in many ways become captive to the devil were shown as only freeing Nephi once their own lives were at stake. No amount of persuasion or the suffering of others could convince them. Nephi clearly wants to associate his brothers with freeing him when the storms threaten as he connects this with the immediate release and doesn't mention the family persuasion/suffering until after.
1 Nephi 18:17
Now my father, Lehi, had said many things unto them, and also unto the sons of Ishmael; but, behold, they did breathe out much threatenings against anyone that should speak for me; and my parents being stricken in years, and having suffered much grief because of their children, they were brought down, yea, even upon their sick-beds.

Note: Notice how the two plans Nephi presumably came up with (since he talked about persuading his brethren) failed. How often do we get discouraged when our own plans fail? Surely he felt as if he was inspired to go and get the gold to buy the plates as he diligently persuaded his brothers to do so. And yet it failed. We get down on ourselves when our own ideas fail and yet Nephi was persistant in trying again. Notice below Lamans reaction to failure... Also consider that Laban might not have been delivered into Nephis hands if not for the first failed attempt. Perhaps Laban was drunk and celebrating on account of his newly acquired treasure. If this is the case it was actually Nephi's divinely inspired failure that ultimately led to success. Success that would have been impossible if Nephi was discouraged and questioned whether his original decisions were the "right" ones.
1 Nephi 3:21
And it came to pass that after this manner of language did I persuade my brethren, that they might be faithful in keeping the commandments of God.

Note: Notice how Laman and Lemuel had been reasonably faithful up until this point. Laman dutifully went the first time... the all made the long trip back to Jerusalem (and they all fled with Lehi in the first place, they later sailed across the seas without knowing where in an untested ship). They even allowed themselves to be convinced that Nephi's plan to buy the plates with what was technically their inheritence. But the plan failed and then they lost their treasure and then lose control and become violent. This speaks much about the love of money among even the seemingly faithful. When their possessions are gone they lose hope and get angry. Because they put their love and trust in the future in wealth and not God. Similar to many in the world now.
1 Nephi 3:28
And it came to pass that Laman was angry with me, and also with my father; and also was Lemuel, for he hearkened unto the words of Laman. Wherefore Laman and Lemuel did speak many hard words unto us, their younger brothers, and they did smite us even with a rod.

Note: If this verse was read you would assume Jerusalem would never fall. Surely the Jews who still prided themselves on keeping the law of Moses would have considered themselves worthy of divine protection. And yet it did fall and the people carried away because they did now live a higher law. Compare this promise of Jerusalem with the promises of America. We should not assume that former scriptural praises of our nation's rigtheousness continue and that we will be protected. Or perhaps even the church being preserved. Because clearly Jersualem fell when God said it would not.

Note: If you think about this we each met our Heavenly Father before this life. So it would be strange to say the purpose of this life is to meet God in the sense of visiting someone. Instead think about how no unclean thing can dwell in Gods presence. To meet God you have to be on an equal level. Meet also means equal. We can't possibly meet or equal God on our own matter how much we try but what we can do is perform labors so the power if the atonement is in our lives which atonement is specifically intended to not only make us worthy to be in God's presence but make us worthy to receive all he has or meet or equal him. Compare with Philippians 2:6 where some were apparently upset with Jesus for being like and equal to God. And Jesus promises to give us all he receives of the Father. Some would suggest this diminishes God but it is not robbery from his stature equal Him. See also D&C 76:95
Alma 34:32
For behold, this life is the time for men to prepare to meet God; yea, behold the day of this life is the day for men to perform their labors.
Alma 34:32
For behold, this life is the time for men to prepare to meet God; yea, behold the day of this life is the day for men to perform their labors.

Note: Compare with Mosiah 2:6 where the people listened to a righteous prophet and turned their tents to face the temple. The Lord calls turning away from the temple an abomination and says he won't hear our prayers if we do this. So one key to having our prayers heard is to attend the temple worthily and faithfully.
Ezekiel 8:16
And he brought me into the inner court of the Lord's house, and, behold, at the door of the temple of the Lord, between the porch and the altar, were about five and twenty men, with their backs toward the temple of the Lord, and their faces toward the east; and they worshipped the sun toward the east.

Note: The Lord is driven away from the temple when those who sin without true repentance pollute his house. Compare with Matthew 8:20 where the Savior says he has no place to lay his head. The temple is his house but it had been corrupted and he could not call it his own or have is spirit dwell in it.
Ezekiel 8:6
He said furthermore unto me, Son of man, seest thou what they do? even the great abominations that the house of Israel committeth here, that I should go far off from my sanctuary? but turn thee yet again, and thou shalt see greater abominations.
