Converted to His Gospel through His Church
The Church was everything to us. We went to lots of meetings, even more than we have today. We attended Primary on Thursday afternoons. Relief Society meetings were on Tuesday mornings. Mutual for the youth was Wednesday night. Saturday was for ward activities. On Sunday, men and young men would go to priesthood meeting in the morning. Midday we would attend Sunday School. Then in the evening we returned for sacrament meeting. With comings and goings and meetings, it seemed our time was consumed with Church activities all day Sunday and most other days of the week.

Recognize, Understand the Spirit
Companion Study
•Talk about the prayers you offer as companions. Are they guided by the Holy Ghost? Have you received answers to your prayers? When you pray as companions, do you:
- Believe that God will give you what you ask for in righteousness?
- Acknowledge and give thanks for answers to your prayers?
- Pray for people by name and consider their needs?
- Pray for each other and for the Spirit to guide you?
- Receive answers to your prayers?
Discuss as companions how you will seek the Spirit more earnestly.
•Discuss the different ways that people describe the influence of the Holy Ghost. Write comments that investigators have made about their experiences with the Spirit in learning the gospel and trying to keep commitments. How can you help others recognize this sacred influence? How can you avoid being manipulative as you do so?
•Consider and discuss how the following counsel applies to you: "You cannot force spiritual things. Such words as compel, coerce, constrain, pressure,
demand, do not describe our privileges with the Spirit. You can no more force the Spirit to respond than you can force a bean to sprout, or an egg to hatch before its time. You can create a climate to foster growth, nourish, and protect; but you cannot force or compel: you must await the growth" (Boyd K. Packer, "The Candle of the Lord," Ensign, Jan. 1983, 53).
•Discuss the following statements and how these principles can change both your prayers and your work. How can your prayers influence your planning, goal setting, work, and activities each day?
"Our deeds, in large measure, are children of our prayers. Having prayed, we act; our proper petitions have the effect of charting a righteous course of conduct for us" (Bruce R. McConkie, "Why the Lord Ordained Prayer," Ensign, Jan. 1976, 12).
"Sincere praying implies that when we ask for any blessing or virtue we should work for the blessing and cultivate the virtue" (David O. McKay, Secrets of a Happy Life, 114-15).
"Ask [God] to put you just where he wants you, and to tell you what he wants you to do, and feel that you are on hand to do it" (Brigham Young, Discourses of Brigham Young, sel. John A. Widtsoe [1954], 46).

Lesson 3: Gospel of Jesus Christ
Jesus taught that we must be baptized of water and also of the Spirit. Baptism by water must be followed by baptism of the Spirit or it is incomplete. Only when we receive baptism and the gift of the Holy Ghost can we receive a remission of our sins and become completely spiritually reborn. We then begin a new spiritual life as disciples of Christ.

Love and Law
This great principle helps us understand the why of many things, like justice and mercy balanced by the Atonement. It also explains why God will not forestall the exercise of agency by His children. Agency—our power to choose—is fundamental to the gospel plan that brings us to earth. God does not intervene to forestall the consequences of some persons’ choices in order to protect the well-being of other persons—even when they kill, injure, or oppress one another—for this would destroy His plan for our eternal progress. He will bless us to endure the consequences of others’ choices, but He will not prevent those choices.

In a revelation given through Joseph Smith in 1841, the Lord designated the stake in Nauvoo, Illinois, a "cornerstone of Zion, which shall be polished with the refinement which is after the similitude of a palace" (D&C 124:2). Under the Prophet's direction, Nauvoo became a thriving center of commerce, education, and the arts. Many people worked their farms, while those who had an acre of land in the city grew fruits and vegetables in home gardens. Sawmills, brickyards, printing offices, flour mills, and bakeries sprang up in the city, as well as shops for carpenters, potters, tinsmiths, jewelers, blacksmiths, and cabinetmakers. In Nauvoo, the Saints could enjoy the theater, balls, and concerts. Hundreds of students were enrolled in schools throughout the community, and plans were under way for a university.

God does not look on the outward appearance. (1 Samuel 16:7.) I believe that He doesn’t care one bit if we live in a castle or a cottage, if we are handsome or homely, if we are famous or forgotten. Though we are incomplete, God loves us completely. Though we are imperfect, He loves us perfectly. Though we may feel lost and without compass, God’s love encompasses us completely.
