Note: Sometimes in life it would be nice to have a Liahona. I know the spirit can direct me the same way, but just think - you would have physical feedback that you are on the correct path. Maybe a cool iPhone app?

1 Nephi 16:10
And it came to pass that as my father arose in the morning, and went forth to the tent door, to his great astonishment he beheld upon the ground a round ball of curious workmanship; and it was of fine brass. And within the ball were two spindles; and the one pointed the way whither we should go into the wilderness.

Note: Moses still had the Spirit with him. He also recognized the differences between God and Satan. By the power of His only Begotten he was able to cast out Satan . Prayer can give us spiritual strength. We can also read and study too give us this power.
